Shrek Jr.

This fairytale-inspired musical based on the 2001 film of the same name, is a fun and bright show. Each ensemble member has a chance to be featured in addition to the main characters. Costumes and Sets for this show are going to be really fun to come up with, especially our Dragon puppet!

  • Auditions for Shrek Jr. are now open! We have 10 actor slots and 6 crew slots left. Signups are first come, first serve. All forms close on May 31st. Please follow the steps below to secure your audition spot. 

    1. Fill out this form if you are an actor.  

    2. Fill out this form if you only want to be crew.

    3. Pay a $25 deposit to reserve your spot. You can pay directly on our website here.

      1. You can choose to pay the deposit and the full camp fee at the same time or separately. If you are paying at the same time, add both “items” to your “cart” on the website. (This system is new for us, so please let me know if you have any issues!) 

      2. You can also pay via Venmo @backyardtheatrea2

      3. If you’d like to pay via check, please make it out to “Backyard Theatre A2 LLC.” Email backyardtheatrea2@gmail.com to coordinate drop off.

    4. If you are crew only, fill out and send the release form found here. Forms can be turned in via paper copy or digitally. Then you are all set! 

    5. If you are an actor, continue with steps 6-9.

    Great, you have an audition slot! Now what? 

    1. Prepare your audition materials in the “Audition Folder” found here.  

      1. Prepare 1 music cut from the audition folder with backing tracks found here.

        1. The soundtrack with voices can be found here for referencing how the song goes!

      2. Prepare 1-2 script cuts also found in the audition folder.

    3. Come to auditions! Auditions are in two time slots. They will be held at 1509 Warwick Ct. 

      1. June 15th 3-5pm

      2. June 15th 6-8pm

      3. Bring: Release form packet, water bottle, comfy clothes, a positive attitude and YOU!

      4. Prepare to be there the whole time slot. If you need to come late/leave early, please note that on your audition form.  

      5. If you cannot make an in-person audition, virtual auditions are possible. Please contact Emma if you are submitting a virtual audition. 

    4. If needed, we will have callbacks on June 16th from 6-8pm. Materials to prepare will be sent out with the callback list. 

    Auditions will consist of group audition activities such as ice breaker games, theatre games, and reading from the script. Then, one by one, the directing team will bring in actors to sing their prepared cuts and answer some questions about themselves. There will also be a brief dance combination taught at auditions. 

    The $25 audition deposit is included in the final price. You can pay them separately or at the same time, it is up to you.

    The deadline for the $25 audition deposit is May 31st

    The deadline for the full payment is June 30th.

  • At this time, LIT applications are closed.

  • $250 for one child

    $450 total for two children

    $650 total for three or more children

    LITs are considered volunteers and therefore do not have to pay a participation fee. However, if an LIT would like to also be an actor, there will be a fee of $50 total to cover costs of costumes.

    Backyard Theatre strongly believes that cost should never be barrier for participation in the arts.

  • Shrek: A grumpy but lovable ogre who just wants to be left alone—until his world is turned upside down. Shrek is on a journey to discover friendship, courage, and self-acceptance.

    Fiona: A feisty, smart, and kind princess with a big secret. Fiona is adventurous, brave, and not afraid to stand up for herself.

    Young and Teen Fiona: Younger versions of Fiona that show time passing in the tower she has been locked in.

    Donkey: Shrek’s endlessly talkative and loyal sidekick. Donkey is energetic, funny, and optimistic, bringing lots of humor and heart to the story.

    Lord Farquaad: The ruthless ruler of Duloc, who has battled issues with his shorter-than-average height his whole life, which has led him to force his subjects into a “perfect” society that leaves no room for uniqueness or difference.

    Dragon: A fierce but misunderstood fire-breather with a soft side. Dragon is powerful, expressive, and eventually shows a playful, loving personality.

    Pinocchio: A leader in the fairytale community who is constantly annoyed that the other fairytale characters don’t recognize his as a “real boy”

    Gingy: A small but mighty cookie with a big personality. Gingy is brave, sassy, and loyal to his friends.

    Storytellers: A group of narrators who tell the story of Young Shrek in song

    Mama Ogre: Shrek’s mother who sends Shrek out alone in the opening

    Papa Ogre: Shrek’s mother who sends Shrek out alone in the opening (no lines)

    Baby Ogre: Young Shrek who is sent out by his parents to live on his own, as all ogres do.

    Captain of the Guards: The leader of the Duloc Guards who relocates the fairytale creatures to Shrek’s swamp

    Bishop: Presides over Lord Farquaad and Fiona’s wedding.

    Dwarf: Lord Farquaad’s father who shows up to the wedding to scold Farquaad for not inviting him to the wedding.

    Fairytale Creatures: A colorful group of misfit characters from classic fairy tales. These roles include fun personalities, physical comedy, and lots of opportunities to shine individually and as a group. All Fairytale Creatures have a few lines and small solo singing lines.

     Roles include, but are not limited to: 

    • Big Bad Wolf

    • Three Little Pigs

    • Wicked Witch

    • Mama, Papa, and Baby Bear

    • Peter Pan

    • Ugly Duckling

    • Pied Piper

    Knights: A group of knights who have been captured by Dragon in her lair and try to warn Shrek to turn back before Dragon sees him!

    Duloc Performers: Citizens of Duloc who are forced by Lord Farquaad to be uniform and not unique.

    Woodland Creatures: Bunnies, Foxes, Bears, etc that Fiona meets when she wakes up along the journey.
